Camp Wellstone meets Milwaukee
Camp Wellstone stopped n Milwaukee October 19-21, drawing more than 100 participants from many states including Wisconsin.
The odds are strong that you will meet many of the participants operating as candidates, campaign managers and volunteers and progressive leaders in the community.
Camp Wellstone is a weekend training program that develops grassroots organizing skills for those who want to elect progressive candidates, develop techniques on important issues or run for office themselves. Participants in the Milwaukee training conceded it was surprsingly tough, personal, intensive and challenging.
The camp is based on the late Senator Paul Wellstone's model, integrating grassroots organizing, electoral organizing, progressive public policy and ethical leadership. The Minnesota Democrat who died tragically in a plane crash was long regarded as the progressive conscience of the US Senate.
The training location was kept quiet before the event and then announced to registered participants. It turned out to be right Downtown.
Three tracks were available:
Citizen Activist: For people interested in citizen lobbying, issue advocacy, and community organizing. This track provided skills in how to win on issues.
Working on a Campaign: Focused on how to be an effective staff or volunteer member of a winning progressive campaign.
Being a Candidate: For people who have made the decision to run for office. Participants here included some who will be running in their district.
The cost was $100 or just $50 for students, low-income, or unemployed participants. Camp participants were responsible for their own accommodations.
