Union leaders quickly back Taylor for county exec
Lena Taylor meeting with labor leaders
Sen. Lena Taylor rushed back from Madison on Halloween to be grilled by two dozen union leaders in a special COPE meeting (Committee on Political Education) to survey the announced candidates for Milwaukee County Executive.
Though many in the meeting room already favored Taylor, the questions did not go easy. Taylor’s philosophy and proven ability to get things done shone through the complexities of the county budget and the formidable task ahead of her, given the war-chest incumbent Scott Walker has accumulated should he decide, as expected, to run for a third term.
But something has to be done, several leaders noted, before Walker totally dismantled the county government and its vital safety nets (not to mention parks and courts).
After a far-ranging interview, the COPE gathering endorsed Taylor for the April 1 2008 race (with a likely Feb. 19 primary) and submitted that recommendation to the November meeting of the Milwaukee County Labor Council delegates, which approved the choice by acclamation.
